The 1922 Modern Art Week was the landmark in the history of Brazilian art. The polemic and visionary event took place on the 13th, 15th, and 17th of February 1922, at the Municipal Theater of São Paulo. The Artistic Manifestation, which featured exhibitions, concerts, and soirees by the so-called “vanguardists” (pioneers of Modernism art) represented not only a break with the Parnassianism, but also a search for an art with freedom expression that would represent Brazil, following the ideals of its time. Modernism found in São Paulo an ideal place to express itself, due to the presence of different cultures and ethnicities and the growing modernization and industrialization of the city, which is home to some of the country’s main museums and art galleries.
