Tips for transporting your pet
Inside the city
How should your pet be transported? If you rent a car, your pet should always be transported in the back seat or trunk (assuming there is adequate ventilation). There are adapters for seat belts, but they can be uncomfortable, so using a kennel is still a good idea, aside from being well accepted in cabs and app transportation.
If you prefer public transportation, since 2015 it is allowed to transport pets in subways, CPTM and intercity busses, but some rules must be followed:
– The pet must not weigh more than 10 kg
– It must be transported in a suitable box
– Outside peak hours (from 4:40 am to 6 am; from 10 am to 4 pm and from 7 pm to midnight) and only in the case of a surgical procedure with proof signed by the veterinarian during peak hours.
– Always carry a current vaccination record.
– The pet must not interfere with the safety and comfort of other passengers.
Air Transportation
Check with each airline for rules on transporting animals; regulations for in-cabin transport vary by airline. Generally, small animals (up to 5 kg) can be carried in the passenger cabin in a box suitable for transporting animals. The companies charge a certain fee, which must be reserved in advance. The kennel must comply with the dimensions specified by the airlines, be comfortable for the animal and provide enough space for it to move as little as possible, and it is recommended to line it with a hygienic mat. Remember to bring water and snacks. It is important to identify the pet and the carrier. To get your pet used to it, train it and use the “kennel” at home a few days before the trip. If the pet is transported in the cargo hold, it is advisable to leave an article of clothing with the “smell” of the caregiver in the “kennel”.
Before the trip, you should take the pet to the veterinarian. The pet’s vaccination record must be up to date (the last vaccination was more than 30 days ago) and the veterinarian must issue a certificate stating that the pet is fit to travel (no more than 10 days before the flight). For international flights, the International Animal Health Certificate (ICC) must be issued and for trips within Mercosur, the Passport for the Transit of Dogs and Cats (which requires electronic identification of the animal). For all pets other than dogs and cats, the issuance of the Animal Transit Guide is required.
