Casa das Caldeiras has a classical architecture from the 1920s. Photo: Casa das Caldeiras/ publicity.
In the 1980s, the Matarazzo industries, the largest industrial complex of Latin America at the time, closed its doors. In São Paulo, Casa das Caldeiras was responsible for the supply of energy to the industries. After it stopped functioning, the building remained, but producing another kind of energy: it was transformed into a cultural center, powered by artistic expression and creativity.
The building was restored in 1999 and today hosts events and is a cultural center. Photo: Casa das Caldeiras/ publicity.
The building with a historic architecture from the 1920s was landmarked in 1986, as a São Paulo landmark, restored and revitalized in 1999, becoming a Cultural Centre for Independent Productions. Today, it hosts and is a residence for artists from different trends that use it as a source of inspiration, means of production, and a place to create and perform.

Through many occupation programs, Casa das Caldeiras opens its doors to the community and today is a reference and a place of cultural resistance in Água Branca neighborhood. Every Sunday the association receives independent producers who offer free events for the community, within the program TODO DOMINGO MUSICAL EM SP. During the week the association is occupied by resident artists, with their different projects participating in the program Obras em Construção.

Casa das Caldeiras Cultural Association (ACCC) was created in 2005 in this space and is a non-profit organization that develops projects of artistic and cultural occupation. Every year it offers artists new residency opportunities. Music, cinema, graffiti, and theater collectives share the same space, in a great mix of art and culture.

The house is self-sufficient, survives with the culture it produces, plays created there, art exhibitions, parties promoted by DJs and B-boys that perform among the boilers. The proposal is that the occupied space should serve not only as a place for cultural production, but also for reflections on the city and society in general.
