Designed by architect Ramos de Azevedo in 1895, the building that now houses the Pinacoteca do Estado was the first museum of arts of. The first donations to the museum were pieces that today are part of the collection, including works of renowned artists Benedito Calixto, Pedro Alejandrino and José Ferraz de Almeida Junior.
The Pinacoteca do Estado now has ten rooms that are divided to house the collection of nearly one hundred thousand works and technical reserve space in which parts are in restoration, cataloging or out of sight.
