An example of construction in the new metropolis which kept becoming modern due to the coffee plantation economy, the Palace of Justice was designed in 1911 by the architects Domiziano Rossi and Felisberto Ranzini from the Technical Office Ramos de Azevedo. The cornerstone was laid in 1920, beginning the construction of the building, and the first inauguration took place in 1933, with the works partially completed. The official inauguration took place on January 25, 1942, after 22 years of construction.
Inspired by the Palazzo di Giustizia from Rome, the building has an beaux-art style, with neo renaissance influence, the façade presents luxurious finishing and it is ornamented with figures, caryatids (female statues with a column function) and Judiciary symbols. In its interior, the highlights are the Salão dos Passos Perdidos, richly adorned in marble and granite and the Jury Plenary, covered with hardwood paneling, with a neoclassical style ceiling, crowned by a skylight in the center. The stained glass windows of the Hall bring symbols linked to the Law and were produced by the traditional Casa Conrado.
On the fourth floor, the Palace houses a permanent exhibition of part of the collection of the Museum of the Court of Justice – today located at the Palacete Conde de Sarzedas.
