On January 25th, 1554, Jesuit priests celebrated the first mass on a place nowadays known as Pateo do Collegio. Both date and location are considered to be the foundation marks of the city and evidence, since its very beginning, the relation of São Paulo – named after the Saint – with the faith and spirituality of its people.
Centuries later, currently with a population of over 12 million inhabitants, São Paulo has changed. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Non-Abrahamic and Afro-Brazilian religions harmoniously live together, revealing the ecumenical aspect of the city, which is the result of the miscegenation process of the population, whose greatest wealth and main characteristic is its diversity.
