Municipal Market

alt

After an iniative of major José Pires do Rio, a 22,000 m² Neoclassic-style building started to be built in 1928, with refined finishing and beautiful windows.  This is the Municipal Market of São Paulo, finished four years later and cost 10,000 'contos de réis'.

At that time, there was no chance to succeed due to lack of transport in the area. At that time, a tram service for traders and their goods only was installed, as well as “Cantareira train”, supplying goods inside the market.

Today, Municipal Market is a national reference due to a huge diversity of tastes, smells and colors of fruits, vegetables, wine, cheese, chocolate, meet, seafood, chicken and other items, giving the client an opportunity to taste products and enjoy the historic atmosphere at the Market, as this building was used as a headquarter for Constitutional Revolution from 1927 to 1933. This building was designed by famous architect Ramos de Azevedo’s bureau; and it is an object of study for university students and researchers.

Cod pastel and mortadella sandwich are two references to the market. Try them!
