Copan building, in the center of São Paulo, celebrated 40 decades in May 25, 2006. A Brazilian modern architecture symbol, it was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, the modernist leader, in 1954, for the 400º anniversary of São Paulo.
Requested by Pan American Company of Hotels and Tourism, this main object was to be a huge urban center, like Rockefeller Center. However, construction works started only in 1957, after several changes in its original plan. Presenting a strong real state and tourist potential was one of the main reasons to develop this project, finished in 1966, by Carlos Leme.
The largest reinforced concrete structure in Brazil is 115 meter tall, with 32 floors and 120,000 m², divided in six blocks, with 1,160 size-varied apartments and almost 5,000 inhabitants and more than 70 shops. Due to such figures, Post Office decided to assign a special zip code for the building condo, 01066-900.
Its S-shaped form is always evident in landscape. Located on Avenida Ipiranga, number 200, downtown, Copan is considered a place ‘with a little of everything’, and has already been scenery for a fiction book called "Arch without Noah - Stories of Copan Building (Arca sem Noé - Histórias do Edifício Copan), by Regina Redha.
