Brazilian Cinematheque

Brazilian Cinematheque is an audiovisual material ‘library’ responsible to keep, promote and restore one of the largest collections in Latin America. People can watch films during events and festivals, make professional and school research, take courses and check photography laboratory and special archives.

This establishment first opened, in 1940, when Clube de Cinema de São Paulo (São Paulo Cinema Club) was founded by young Philosophy students at University of São Paulo (USP). This club reopened in 1946 and, in 1984, under the name of Cinematheque, was incorporated to Federal government as an organism of Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC). Today Cinematheque is under Secretariat of Audio visual’s responsibility.

In 1992, Cinematheque moved to its current location - XIX century buildings protected and restored by National Trust.

Today, Cinematheque houses almost 200,000 film rolls, corresponding to 30,000 long and feature film and short film titles. Films and footages are mainly donated. Both Brazilian and international fiction, documentary, advertising and family records made since 1895. The most impressive collections are Cine Jornal Brasileiro, Carriço and Bandeirantes da Tela, from the 1930s, made in cellulose nitrate. There is also a wide archive of documents, like books, magazines, original scripts, photography and panels. This collection also houses footages of old TV Tupi - the first Brazilian TV chain. In 1985, 180,000 rolls of 16-mm films featuring news interviews and video tapes with entertainment programming had been donated.

It is a worth attraction, always full of interesting events and its collection provides an excellent rich part of the history in Brazil and in other countries.
