São Miguel Arcanjo Chapel

The oldest temple in São Paulo lies on the Eastern Region. Under guidance of carpenter Fernão Munhoz, São Miguel Arcanjo Chapel was built by Guaianases Indians in 1622. This church was one of the first buildings to be protected by National Trust.

In 1938, almost three centuries after being built, the Indian Chapel (Capela dos Indios, as it is known), practically destroyed, had undergone a revitalization process. A detailed work trying to find its origins keeping its architecture authenticity and artistic elements. Paintings from the São Paulo Colonial time, Baroque arts and Inca drawings were found. Recovery included also wood pieces and ornaments sold to antique shops.

In order to make this area clearer and easily seen, Praça Aleixo Monteiro Mafra, a square in front of the church, had also been restored. A garden area had been implemented and buildings around the church were removed.

There was an agreement with society to suspend worship in order to keep the church under good conditions. Rather than the religious services, visits were organized with panels and boards, presenting archeological and historical research and showing the influence of people (native Indians, Jesuits, Franciscans, colonizers, Northeastern immigrants) region. This program also offers lectures and workshops to make people aware of keeping a historical site.
