Architecture

São Paulo is a connected city, creator of trends, marked by its daring and innovative style. It is also seen on its architecture that mixes with the city landscape.

In its 455 years, the city gathered real architecture masterpieces, since the most ancient buildings in mud hut – like Pateo do Collegio (where the city’s history began) was rebuilt, but it still has one of the walls in this style and the Sacred Art Museum – until the most modern – like São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), Brazilian Museum of Sculpture (Mube), Hotel Unique and Tomie Ohtake Institute, by Ruy Ohtake, and Oscar Niemeyer’s works, like Copan Building, Latin American Memorial and the beauties of Ibirapuera Park (Oca (hut), the Auditorium, the Marquee, and so on).

European, Renascence and Eclectic styles are also seen on several designs throughout the city, like Júlio Prestes Railway Station, Luz Railway Station, Museum of São Paulo (Ipiranga Museum, the first São Paulo brick building), Bandeirantes Palace and Pinacoteca (Art Gallery) – projected by Ramos de Azevedo, one of the most important inhabitants of São Paulo, who also projected the Municipal Theater and Casa das Rosas (Rose House).

There are other beautiful examples of buildings from the colony age of Brazil, like Solar (House) of Marquise of Santos, the Casa do Sertanista (a house of Indian folklore) and Casa do Bandeirante (a house displays the age of internal exploration) and other regions gathering architectonic beauties, such as Paulista Avenue and Berrini Avenue and Historic City Center. We also have to mention the religious architecture, almost in Gothic, Baroque and Byzantine styles, like Sé Cathedral and Consolação Church, São Francisco Square and São Bento Monastery.

All of them and several other examples of architecture make São Paulo a place to be observed.
