The most famous of the arts and handicraft markets are those at República Square, MASP, in Paulista Avenue, and Liberdade Square, in the district of the same name.
MASP MARKET
The antique fairs held in front of the MASP (São Paulo
Museum of Art), in Paulista Avenue, and the MUBE (Brazilian Museum of Sculpture), in Europa Avenue, are also very popular, attracting collectors and people in search of rarities, paintings, sculptures, lamps, candelabras, old coins, and pieces for home decoration.
REPÚBLICA SQUARE MARKET
In the República Square market, the main attractions are paintings and drawings. Many local artists sit and paint right there, in the square itself. You’ll also find handcrafted ornaments and dolls, clothes, costume jewelry and many other items. Another great attraction is the food. Barbecues, sweets and Chilean “empanadas” are the most sought-after.
BENEDITO CALIXTO MARKET
The busiest of the fairs is the one at Benedito Calixto Square. Often with a diverse public – including lots of artists and designers – it has around 300 sellers, with items ranging from ornaments and antiques, to vinyl records (LPs), porcelain and rustic furniture.
LIBERDADE MARKET
The market at Liberdade, which is in the heart of São Paulo’s oriental colony, offers a wealth of Japanese cuisine and handicraft. The market has been held here for around 30 years, and has more than 200 stalls, offering jewelry, Japanese lamps, bonsai trees, aquarium fish and knick-knacks in general, mainly with an oriental theme. The stalls selling the delicious yakisoba and tempura are also very popular.
